Richard "Gentlehawk" James is a retired middle school science teacher who began to draw for fun in 2001 as a hobby.  This led to dabbling in watercolor and then to his present use of acrylics.

While traveling, he discovered the magic and spirituality of New Mexico, exploring Taos, Sante Fe, and Chaco Canyon among other locations.  This provided the inspiration for his first phase of paintings which centered on Southwest genre.  Further travels to Vancover, Mt. Shasta and other California locations, Hawaii, Scotland and England led to an extension of his focus to vistas and natural settings of those locales.  During this time, he also pursued spiritual studies leading to a profound feeling of connection with spirit especially as expressed through nature.  His goal for his paintings is to stimulate the viewer to connect with Spirit, promoting a feeling of Oneness.

Richard was awarded the "Greenhorn" Trophy and "Best New Artist" Award in his first showing at the Southwest Art Gallery Show in Texas.  His work is now available in Idyllwild; Mt. Shasta; Mammoth Lakes; Escondido and Modesto, CA; Fredericksburg, Texas; and Winchester, England in addition to this website.

He and his lovely wife, Margaret, now reside in Central California.
